What is it?

An opportunity scorecard is a tool used to evaluate new roles or opportunities that come your way. Not limited to jobs, you can use the scorecard to review activities based on your core values or themes that are important to you.

Why should I do it?

The quickest way to be overwhelmed by things coming your way is by not having a system to evaluate them. The scorecard outlines your key criteria in an easy-to-use format that allows you to quickly decide whether you should spend more time on the opportunity.

📝 FYI: You don’t have to know your core values to complete this activity. You can always come back to it and make changes.

How do I do it?

Start with big themes

You will see that the template scorecard is separated into big themes such as company, role, lifestyle, etc. The form is filled out for you but you can edit or add your own themes (reviewing your core values can help brainstorm themes that are important to you). Once you have 4-5 themes, start to identify criteria within each.

Identify your criteria

Some criteria may not fit perfectly into a theme and that is okay. If you don’t connect to the questions in the template, feel free to change those questions or get rid of the theme entirely if they don’t feel applicable to your decision-making. Identify 5 'must-haves' and make sure to bold them in the document. These are your non-negotiables.

💡 Quick Tip: You can add a row by right-clicking and adding a row above or below the selected row.

What’s next?

After you complete the activity, we will receive your answers via email and review them plus send you a copy for your records. We recommend you keep them in one place, like an email folder, for easy access.

Scoring

The scoring is straightforward, there is a drop-down menu for each question under columns B-G labeled ‘yes’, ‘partially’, and ‘no’. For each 'Yes', 1 point will be added to the total, and for 'Partially', half a point. You will be able to see the total tally at the bottom of each opportunity in row 47 (the row numbers may change if you make edits to the form).

Review and edit often

Throughout this journey, you will see changes or updates to your career plan, make sure to add those changes to keep this document up to date so that when a new opportunity comes in, you can go right in and evaluate it.
