What is it?

Writing a letter to yourself is a written message addressed to the future you, from the present you. It can help set your goals or intentions for the program and reflect on growth. It is the first exercise we do because it is foundational to your success. What does success look like? Exactly! This is an exercise in discovering your goals and also taking the perspective of having already achieved them.

Why should I do it?

Writing a letter to your future self is a powerful exercise. It forces you to both look inward at your present self and consider what you want for your future. Additionally, whenever you reread this letter once you have concluded the program, it will remind you of where you were when you started in an effort to mark progress and all that you have achieved.

📝 FYI: Write this letter as if you were writing to a friend, and that friend is you. What would you want to see from a friend who went through this program with you?

“The future depends on what you do today.” ~ Mahatma Gandhi

How do I do it?

Set intention

What do you want to get out of the program? Why? Before you start the exercise make sure you know directionally what you are looking to accomplish, even if some of the details (like exactly what you will do or how you will do it) are uncertain.

Answer in the affirmative

Respond as if you are at the end of the program. What do you want to be able to say you did? How did you show up and what did you learn? These answers set the stage for your habits during the entire year.

💡 Quick Tip: Try not to set yourself up for failure by making intentions that live too outside of your control: a promotion, or winning a deal. Be more specific on how you put yourself in a position for those opportunities.
